The Porsche 718 EV lives! For the first time in a hot minute, we have fresh photos of Porsche’s all-electric Boxster replacement, and we can see a bit more of the car to boot.

If it seems like the 718 EV has been in development hell forever, well, that’s because it has. For a while, it seemed like the project might be killed off entirely. Earlier this year, Audi indirectly confirmed that the project was still in development by revealing that it was still working on a new TT sports car to ride on the same chassis.

Prototypes of the electric 718 have been lapping the ‘ring for years now (see the video below). Since then, the EV has shed some of its most visually disruptive camouflage, and we can now see the body sides and most of the rear end as it will likely go into production.

If anything, Porsche’s design here seems incredibly conventional. Without being told, we’d have no way of knowing that this is an electric car. The keen-eyed observer might note a slightly elongated rear end compared with the standard gas car, but again, if you weren’t looking for it, would you even notice?

Motor1 first shared the following spy clip of the prototype Boxster EV at the Ring shot by CarSpyMedia way back in 2023. In the YouTube video, it’s clear the car was still wearing more significant camouflage to throw off casual viewers. Cladding on the back of the vehicle hid the rear-end design, and a fake exhaust helped sell the idea that it was simply a quiet gas model.

Hearing the vehicle in motion, though, was enough to tell anyone that it’s an EV. Beyond the rush of the air and the noise of the tires, there was precious little sound emanating from the car. The Cayman is expected to follow the same path as the Boxster’s. While the duo has traditionally only been available with rear-wheel-drive, it’s suspected that the EV model could introduce a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant. We originally expected the car to arrive some time in 2024 or 2025. Needless to say, that did not happen.
