At 5,390 pounds, the new M5 weighs about 400 pounds more than two Mazda Miatas in their heaviest configuration. I did the math, believe me. The hybrid bits alone have added nearly 900 lbs over the previous-generation model. To make matters worse, the car is substantially bigger, so there’s even more bulk than before. The Internet seemingly hates the sports sedan because of this. BMW has read the negative comments on social media, and it’s a bit pissed. In the same interview with Bimmer Today during which he announced a next-gen M3 with a gas engine, the M boss also…
The Toyota Land Cruiser is back, baby. After a brief two-year hiatus, the off-road bruiser returns to the Toyota lineup for the 2024 model year. Senior editor Chris Perkins already got a quick spin in the new Land Cruiser this past April, but I’ve got the base 1958 model for a week and I’m ready to see how it performs—both on and off the road. The 1958 model is the cheapest Land Cruiser you can get. This 2024 model starts at $57,345 with the destination fees, and the one I’m testing has no options, so it costs exactly that. Toyota…
The last few years haven’t been easy for automakers. A global pandemic, supply chain issues, and political turmoil combined to wreak havoc on numerous industries. New car sales suffered as a result, but that appears to be changing for the better in 2024. In some cases, much better. With the first three-quarters of automaker sales figures tabulated, we’re getting a preview of how the last few months of 2024 might shake out for the US auto industry. On this list, there are familiar faces like Chevrolet and Ford, but you’ll also find some big surprises at both ends of the…
Mercedes-Benz had another month of low sales for its electric vehicles. Sales of the company’s three EVs, the EQB, the EQE, and the EQS, fell by 42 percent versus the same quarter last year. Despite the faltering EV division, sales for Mercedes are up 11 percent compared to Q3 2023. Mercedes isn’t having a great time with its lineup of electric vehicles. The company just reported US sales for the third quarter, revealing yet another three months of falling sales for the EQB, EQE, and EQS. Sales of those three nameplates are down 42 percent for Q3 2024, from 9,984…
Owning one car for the rest of your life is a nice idea in theory—I call it the “Forever Car.” But the reality is, there probably isn’t one single vehicle that’s so comfortable, reliable, and fun to drive that you’d never want to replace it. Especially these days, with in-cabin tech evolving at a rapid pace and reliability being so flimsy. But for my money, the Lexus IS500 F Sport Performance comes pretty close to a Forever Car. It offers an excellent blend of luxury and performance, with a brawny naturally aspirated V-8. I could see myself owning this car…
BMW plans to offer the next-generation M3 with a gasoline engine. BMW engineers are already working to make the straight-six engine compliant with upcoming emissions regulations. BMW will continue to offer a gas M3 so long as there’s demand. Enthusiasts have feared that BMW’s push toward electrification would kill the combustion M3, but that’s not happening anytime soon. In an interview published Thursday, BMW M boss Frank van Meel told Bimmer Today the automaker plans to continue offering the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine in future M3 models if the demand is there. M’s head honcho told the publication BMW engineers are already…
The R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R is one of the most iconic sports cars of all time—and with secondhand values of at least $75,000 here in the US, one of the most sought-after, too. Unfortunately, that makes it a prime target for criminals. Nissan found that out recently when an R32 was stolen from the automaker’s historic collection in Australia. A Nissan Australia spokesperson confirmed to News.com.au that the rare sports car had been stolen from the company’s headquarters in Melbourne. “Unfortunately our original R32 GT-R has been stolen and is now subject to a police investigation,” the spokesperson said. Nissan…
After nearly three decades on the market, the Lexus LX has finally been electrified. The fourth-generation posh SUV spawns a new 700h version positioned at the top of the lineup. While the downsizing bug has bitten many hybrid vehicles in recent years, that’s not the case here. The luxobarge retains its twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine and throws a parallel hybrid system into the mix. A motor generator with a clutch is nestled between the combustion engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission. Unlike previous Lexus models with a parallel hybrid setup, the LX 700h gets both an alternator and a starter.…
A few weeks ago, we wrote about how Porsche will fit all Carrera GTs in America with new tires as part of a recall repair. Porsche today revealed a bit more info about the tire, a new Pilot Sport Cup 2 co-developed with Michelin specifically for the V-10 supercar. Michelin was the original tire supplier for the Carrera GT, designing a set of Pilot Sport 2 tires for its launch back in 2004. In 2013, Porsche and Michelin developed a version of the Pilot Super Sport for the car, and a little over a decade later, they’ve done the same…
In 2026, Mercedes will give the current-generation S-Class a mid-cycle update. Earlier this year, CEO Ola Källenius revealed the luxury brand has “invested a lot more in the model update of the new combustion engine S-Class than we normally spend on a facelift.” Looking ahead, traditionalists will be glad to hear the next iteration of Stuttgart’s flagship is still going to have conventional powertrains. The Mercedes boss chatted with Britain’s Autocar magazine about the duality of the S-Class. He reiterated that an electric namesake model is planned as a replacement for the odd-looking EQS. The gas model is sticking around for…
