Hyundai’s Ioniq EVs are often noticed on the road for their futuristic looks, but the automaker says it’s this new concept, called the Initium, that truly represents its design trajectory. A production derivative of it is due to release in the first half of next year, and in time, all of the company’s models will borrow cues from what we see here. Visually, there’s a lot going on, and Hyundai has a name for it: “Art of Steel.” This is the design language that will shape future additions to the brand’s portfolio, regardless of what they’re powered by. That’s important…
Ford has announced it will temporarily pause F-150 Lightning production from mid-November until at least the end of the year. Due to low demand and the state of dealership stock, Ford’s electric pickup production line in Dearborn will shut down at the end of the day on November 15. As of now, manufacturing is expected to start back up after the new year, on January 6. “We continue to adjust production for an optimal mix of sales growth and profitability,” said Ford in a statement, according to Automotive News. This news comes after a recent Q3 earnings call in which…
Jeep unveiled the Recon concept in 2022 and hasn’t had much to say about it since, but it looks like the brand has been working hard behind the scenes. Marketed as a true off-roader, the electrified SUV is undergoing final development testing and it appears nearly ready to make its debut. Reddit user Mr_Ekles spotted a Recon test mule in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and initially thought engineers were testing an updated Ford Bronco Sport. It’s a relatively easy mistake to make. With the seven-slot grille hidden by psychedelic camouflage, the Recon’s tall, softened-yet-boxy silhouette is a little Bronco Sport-esque. There…
When Scout Motors finally unveiled its first two models, the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck, it also announced that it was going to sell them directly to customers, cutting out dealers as middlemen. Direct-sales models aren’t all that new anymore, thanks to upstart EV brands like Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid. However, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) has a particular bone to pick with Scout over its strategy, and it intends to block the retail plan however it can. According to Automotive News, NADA CEO Mike Stanton said that the union is going to fight Scout “in courthouses and…
It can be tough to avoid deer in the road. Sometimes, they’ll leap into your path at the last second, giving you very little time to react. Other times, you’ll come up on a deer just chilling in the way, and there’s plenty of room to slowly come to a stop, or steer around them. Unless you’re relying on Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” system, in which case, your car might just roll on through without a care. An X user going by the handle Paul S posted a video to the platform from the dashcam of his Tesla Model 3, showing…
I’m in the driver’s seat of the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO—the off-road-focused flagship of the Ram lineup—in the dirt, and being invited to get as sideways as I feel comfortable with. Further, I’m feeling stoked to be sampling its signature Baja drive mode on a course that Stellantis engineers say really showcases this rig’s capabilities. The decommissioned gravel-pit-gone-wild is in Holly, Michigan, not far from Ram’s Auburn Hills hive mind, and this “serious work environment,” as one of Ram’s crew called it includes rubble, small boulders, and lots of whoop-dee-doos, amid stretches of extra-fine sand that I have a hunch…
Mopar is ringing in SEMA 2024 with an “electromodded” take on a 1967 Plymouth GTX, made to show off the potential of its e-Crate conversion kit. The e-Crate initiative raises a path forward for owners to keep their classic E- and B-Body Mopars on the road—at least in spirit—and the team has done a remarkable job with the appearance of this restomod. Yet, with a mere 335 horsepower on tap and max range of 250 miles, this particular build isn’t likely to sway old-school muscle diehards. This ’67 GTX concept is packed with a ton of subtle but dramatic exterior…
Porsche will continue to invest in gas cars. The company admits EV adoption isn’t rising as it had hoped. It will give people what they want: gas, hybrid, and electric. In early 2022, Porsche said electric vehicles would account for more than 80% of total annual sales by the decade’s end. That goal is still in place, although the House of Zuffenhausen added an asterisk next to 2030 by saying it’ll depend on how customers react to EVs. In a Q&A session with the press during the conference call pretraining to Q3 2024 sales, the German brand admitted things aren’t going…
All it took was a young, hungry Austrian engineer by the name of Ferdinand Karl Piëch to think, “An inline-four runs a bit too rough” and “Well, an inline-six is a bit too long” for the odd but lovable inline-five to first exist, then become the defining engine layout for Audi. Well, Piëch was also a grandson of Ferdinand Porsche and heir to the Volkswagen empire, so nobody could say ‘no’ to an idea like that one, or any other idea for that matter. Take the impossible Volkswagen Phaeton, Bugatti Veyron, Porsche 917, and Audi Quattro as examples. Dieselgate too.…
Toyota is the end-all, be-all when it comes to reliability. Few brands come close, but none can match it. Even with such a reputation, it’s impossible to be perfect. This Toyota engine gave up after 73,000 miles, showing that even the best can fail sometimes. This naturally aspirated 2ZR-FXE inline-four came out of a 2016 Toyota Prius, according to the I Do Cars YouTube channel. Seeing as how a vast majority of cars with this engine are still on the road, it’s a bit unusual, especially with such low mileage. There’s no immediate damage on the outside of the engine,…
